What are orthotics?

Orthotics are custom-made shoe or heel inserts designed to support the unique structure of your feet and ankles.

Am I a candidate for orthotics?

To determine if you’re a candidate for orthotics, make an appointment with Optima Foot and Ankle. Following a physical exam, a review of your medical history, and a discussion of your treatment goals, your provider can make recommendations that align with your needs.

Orthotics aren’t always recommended right away. Your podiatrist usually recommends lifestyle changes such as exercise modifications and/or changing shoes first. If these measures don’t provide relief, you may be a good candidate for orthotics.

Are there different types of orthotics?

Rigid orthotics

Rigid orthotics are tough and lightweight. They’re usually materials like plastic or carbon fiber and fit comfortably inside any type of shoe. They help prevent excess movement and hold your foot or ankle in place. Your provider might recommend rigid orthotics if you suffer a stress fracture or experience ankle instability.

Accommodative orthotics

Accommodative orthotics are made of a soft, padded material. They provide a cushion for your feet and ankles and can take the pressure off of bunions, blisters, or plantar warts. They can also help individuals with diabetes avoid wounds, calluses, and corns. Like rigid orthotics, accommodative orthotics fit comfortably inside your shoes.

How are custom orthotics manufactured?

The prescription orthotics provided by Optima Foot and Ankle are thinner, lighter, and more comfortable than traditional custom orthotics.

Custom orthotics support the unique shape and structure of your feet, so it’s crucial that your initial measurements are accurate. Your podiatrist also assesses your gait to ensure that your orthotics support you where you need it most.

Your provider then sends the specifications for your orthotics to a lab that manufactures them.

A week or two later, you return to the office to try on your orthotics. If necessary, your podiatrist can make adjustments or request changes.
